Adopt a Dog

Next steps in your adoption journey.
Dogs make the best friends!

Have you filled out the Adoption Application? Have you read about Finding Your New Best Friend? If so, let’s continue!

  1. Notify us! Email the adoption coordinators with your decision to adopt.
  2. Sign and pay. Watch your email for an electronic Adoption Contract via PandaDoc. You will need to initial and electronically sign the Adoption Contract. There will also be a link to make the adoption fee payment. Please do not make the payment directly from our website; use the link provided in the contract. You will not be able to take the dog home without doing these two things first.
  3. Bring a Martingale collar AND a leash with you when you pick up your new pup! We will not release the dog to you without these. A Martingale collar is an important safety precaution as your dog adjusts to his/her new life, as it is made to prevent him/her from being able to slip out of the collar. Please consult with his/her foster to determine what size you should have. You can find a Martingale collar at your local pet store or online.
  1. Ask the foster what type of food the dog has been eating. If you decide to change the type of food, it must be done gradually to prevent the dog from getting sick. Mix the new food in with the old food for several days, gradually adjusting the ratio until he/she is eating the new food entirely.
  2. Make an appointment with your vet to secure a heartworm prevention prescription. The foster can tell you when the latest dose of preventative was given. Indiana is considered a heartworm “red zone” due to our high mosquito population, so this is very important to give year-round.
  3. Sign up for a positive reinforcement training class as quickly as possible. If you can, it’s best for all older family members to attend so that your dog is receiving consistent training. You’ll find training to be a way for you to bond while establishing good boundaries and behaviors. The foster can tell you specifics about behavior and commands learned, if any, but cannot guarantee behavior once in a new environment. We require you to commit to training as a stipulation for adopting a Love of Labs dog.
  4. Please remember all dogs need an adjustment period when transitioning to a new home, environment, and routine. Following the 3-3-3 rule in dog adoption helps everyone know what to expect and when.
